A common concern these days is whether or not democracy can survive three more years of Trump, assuming he lasts that long.
It is surprising how fragile our democracy actually is and a mystery how such a corrupt group of autocratic, racist, and self-absorbed
radical-right "politicians" could take over our government. Big money has been spent over decades planning what amounts to a slow coup. Another answer seems to me to be the dumbing down of the population over the past 50 years or so, especially after the rise of social media. FOX "News" is, of course, a prime example but the root problem must be a massive failure in our education system from top to bottom. Grade inflation is solid evidence of this. Now many colleges are attempting to intruduce three-year bachelors degrees for the sole purpose of reducing costs. No mention is made of how this will impact the quality of a college degree. Democracy should be able to rebound but it will not be the same democracy we knew. Maybe it will be better or, at leat, more resiliant.
